Diagnostics
Radiology, sonography and pathology: what each one does
Three of the most common diagnostic disciplines, explained in plain language — and why your doctor may ask for more than one.
Awaiting medical review
When your doctor recommends an investigation, it usually falls into one of a few broad disciplines. Knowing what each one is can make the visit feel more familiar.
Radiology
Radiology covers imaging investigations that let doctors see structures inside the body. The images are interpreted by a radiologist, who prepares a report for your referring doctor.
Sonography
Sonography, or ultrasound, creates images using sound waves rather than radiation. A sonologist performs and interprets the scan.
Pathology
Pathology involves testing samples such as blood in a laboratory. Results help doctors understand what is happening inside the body and monitor changes over time.
Why more than one test?
Each discipline answers a different kind of question. Your doctor decides which investigations are appropriate for you, and will explain the results in the context of your health.
If you have questions about a test you have been advised, please speak with your doctor or call JDMC.
